Why DeepSeek Has Become My Daily Driver
Let’s talk about the Whale in the room — DeepSeek. I’ve been using it for a month and it’s quickly become my daily driver.
No one I know has lost their jobs to AI yet, so imagine my surprise to see an AI losing its job due to AI.
Alright, let’s get into it.
Is Actually Open Source
DeepSeek’s models are truly open-source. No gatekeeping, no hidden paywalls. Not yet anyway.
You can download the models directly from HuggingFace or use the interface at chat.deepseek.com (my go-to).
While OpenAI’s branding might fool you into thinking it’s a community-first project, its models are locked behind API fees, opaque updates, and incremental monetization strategies. DeepSeek, by contrast, feels like a rare case of a company prioritizing accessibility over profit theatrics.
The epic thing is, if done right Open Source can not only prove to be a viable business model, but it’s a win-win-win scenario where everyone involved stands to benefit.
By making their models Open Source, DeepSeek is doing a brilliant job at positioning their models as the industry de facto. This would encourage startups to use DeepSeek as their base model, saving costs, and creating a symbiotic relationship with DeepSeek.
